ABOUT USIn 2017, GEMS, Girls in Engineering, Math, and Science, was established at Richards Middle School in Columbus, Georgia. The girls involved in GEMS furthered their knowledge and interests in science, engineering, and math by partaking in a variety of activities in their community including tours of the labs at Columbus Water Works and Skype calling with female professionals at NASA. However, after three passionate generations of GEMS, the teacher sponsor was promoted to become the director of the science department of the district which meant she could no longer continue to sponsor the program at Richards. Now, members of all three generations of GEMS attend Columbus High School. Thanks to Laura Kate Holden, an active first generation GEM, the program is once again on its feet, cultivating an all new generation of girls ready to dive in and get more girls all around the community to jump into the STEM field, which undoubtedly could use more amazing women!

GEMS gives girls fun, thought-provoking opportunities in Science,
Technology, Engineering, and Math.
Going into 2020, GEMS are ready to show their passions for STEM:
Launching the first collective meeting of 2020, GEMS is proud to see many new, beautiful faces of girls who have all dedicated themselves to getting more incredible opportunities. The program began with less than 15 girls, GEMS currently has more than 50 great girls! All of of the old faces from the first few generations have returned including our president, Laura Kate Holden, and several officers including Cadie Parker, Sumerlyn Dawson, Cassidy Fine, and Kate Harbison(not pictured). Pictured are a mix of new members, second generation, and first generation GEMS. Pictured is a mere portion of the 50 girls who fill up this classroom every Friday, ecstatic to engage in GEMS.
